Spiritual Exercises: Fiction & Religion

In this workshop, we’ll be thinking about fiction concerned with all varieties of religious experience. We’ll look to writers like Denis Johnson, Rabih Alameddine, Marilynne Robinson, and James Baldwin, keeping in mind the oldest of hangups, the slippery relationship between words and the ineffable. Come to the workshop with a “relic”—a memory of a religious object or experience you might be interested in using in your writing.
