Haley Quinton is a soon-to-be graduate of the MFA program at the University of Memphis. Her writing focuses on children learning to navigate the complex and often cruel world created by the adults around them. She is the former managing editor of The Pinch Journal. Her writing can be found in Adelaide Literary Magazine, The University of Memphis Alumni Magazine, Good Works Review, and others.

Creating Compelling Child Characters

Many great works of literature utilize key characters who happen to be children. But it’s all too easy for child characters to be too cliché, or too cutesy, or too flat. In this workshop, we will explore how to create child characters who are well-rounded, complex, and multi-dimensional, capable of carrying along a plot just as well—or better—as any adult character.
