Roulette Bets Explained

The sheer number of betting types can appear daunting to the novice player. To circumvent doing your own research on the topic, read on to discover our easy-to-read summary of common Roulette bets.

Outside Bets

These are broader wages that focus on colors and numbers and are placed on the wheel’s perimeter. Although the payout will be lower, outside Roulette bets provide a better chance of winning.

Red/Black

This even money Roulette bet is the easiest to make. The player must guess if the ball will land on a black or red number. The odds of a red/black bet are 1:1. However, there isn’t exactly a 50% chance of winning. American Roulette has an extra ‘00’ spot, and European Roulette has a ‘0’ included on the wheel. The bet pays out even money.

Odd/Even

Players must choose whether the ball will land on an odd or even number. The odds for this even money bet are 1:1.

High/Low

The player must choose if the ball will land on a low number (1-18) or a high number (19-36) on the wheel. This is also an even money bet with 1:1 odds.

Columns

The player bets on whether the ball will land in one of the three columns on the wheel. There are 12 numbers included in each column. The first column includes numbers 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, and 34. The second column includes 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, and 35. The third column includes 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, and 36. This Roulette bet has 2:1 odds, giving the player a chance to double their money.

Dozens

The player places a bet on the ball, landing on a section of a dozen numbers, i.e. one to 12, 13 to 24, 25 to 36. The odds are 2:1 and a player can double their money.

Inside Bets

Inside bets include any numbers or number combinations located within the number rectangle in the center of the table. These Roulette bets are higher risk but offer bigger payouts.

Straight Up

Players bet on any individual number on the wheel. This simple bet offers odds of 35:1.

Split

Players bet on a line that separates two adjacent numbers, e.g., 25/26, 8/9. If the ball lands on one of the two chosen numbers, the player wins. The payout is 17:1.

Street (or Trio Bets/Stream Bets/Row Bets)

Players bet on the ball landing on three adjacent numbers, e.g., 4,5,6. The chips are placed at the bottom of the row, below the first number. The payout is 11:1.

Corner (or Four-Number Bets/Square Bets)

Players bet on one of four numbers that have to create a square, e.g., 8, 9, 11, 12. The chip must be placed on the corner where all four numbers meet. The payout is 8:1.

Six Line (or Six-Number Bets/Quint Bets)

Players bet on the ball covering six consecutive numbers. The chip is placed in between the two chosen rows, on the line separating the inside and outside bets. This bet has 5:1 odds.

Five-Number Bets (or Top-Line Bet)

Players place their bets on 00, 0, 1, 2, and 3. The bet offers a payout of 6:1.

Basket (or First Four Bet)

Players bet on numbers 0, 1, 2, or 3. The Basket bet has a payout of 6:1.

Snake Bet

This bet forms a serpentine pattern on the wheel, covering the following numbers: 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34. The bet payout is 2:1.

Call Bets

Included in French and European Roulette, these Roulette bets aren’t always found at all online casino sites. Instead of placing cash or chips on the table, the players call out the bets.

Fixed Called Bet

These bets remain the same, e.g., Neighbors of Zero (numbers between 22 and 25); Thirds of the Wheel (numbers between 33 and 27); Zero Game bet (seven numbers closest to the 0, i.e., all numbers between 12 to 15); Orphans bet (eight numbers, i.e., 17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, 0.)

Variable Called Bet

These bets are not fixed, e.g, Neighbors bet (an individual number and the two consecutive numbers on both sides); Final Straight (includes numbers that all have the same final digit, e.g., 0, 10, 20, 30); Final Split bet (numbers based on two digits, e.g., 11, 2, 1, 22, 21, or 12).
